Is Being Good Good Enough?

St. Michael Anglican Church
Sixth Sunday after Pentecost- July 5th 2023
Is Being Good Good Enough?

Is Being Good Good Enough?

Pastoral Note from Rev. Seth Enriquez

‘If you listen to one preacher you’ll end up mimicking them and suppress the voice God has given you to use’.

I can’t say that’s a direct quote, but that’s what I heard my professor say in class at my preaching course in seminary. And in the years since I’ve been in preaching class, this has rung true to me many times. So I’ve done my best to keep a quiver full of preachers that I turn to for their teaching, to be challenged and encouraged by their words, and to grow in my faith. ...

Charlestown Staff Residence Fire.

Charlestown Staff Residence Fire.

The fire at Lake Louise's Charlestown Staff Residence has been devastating. Many people have lost their belongings and are now facing a dire housing situation amidst an already very complicated community housing crisis.

On July 11th we remember Benedict of Nursia.

On July 11th we remember Benedict of Nursia.

Father of Western monasticism.

Benedict was born into a noble Roman family in Nursia, a small town near Spoleto. He grew up in Rome, and was in the middle of his studies when he decided to leave Rome and settle in Enfide, in the Simbruini mountains about 40 miles from Rome. In 530, he founded the great Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino, situated on a hilltop between Rome and Naples.

There, Benedict developed the practical and spiritual guidelines for monastic life, which is now known as the Benedictine Rule. The Rule is written in seventy-three short chapters, split into two parts: the spiritual, focusing on how to live a Christian life on earth; and the administrative, detailing how to run a monastic community effectively and equitably. Gradually the Benedictine Rule was adopted in religious houses throughout Christendom, particularly during and following the reign of the Frankish Emperor Charlemagne (d. 814) who helped to promote it. The Rule has defined the dominant form of monasticism in Western Europe up to the present

Gift Cards.

Gift Cards.

Corporation and Parish Council are exploring the use of Grocery Cards as a way to donate to St. Michael’s church without taking money “out of your pocket”. Safeway and Save-On both offer discounts to charitable organizations on bulk purchases of grocery cards that can be re-sold for their full value.
How does it work?
1. The church purchases grocery cards from the grocery stores in bulk for a discounted price.
2. The grocery cards are sold to parishioners for their full price. For example, at church on Sunday or in the office during the week, buy a $100 grocery card for your favourite grocery store from the church.
3. Spend the grocery card at that grocery store, just as you would any gift card. Yes, you can use the cards on Tuesday discount days.
4. The church then benefits from the difference between the discounted price we paid and the full face value of the cards when they are sold to parishioners.
The plan would be to start by purchasing the minimum amount of cards at a 2% discount and use the proceeds from sales to build up the fund to the amount of cards needed for a 5% discount. At that point, we can begin to designate the profits to specific projects.
We are considering starting with one of the two stores in Canmore. On Sunday, there will be a paper available at coffee for you to answer the question:If you were to buy gift cards from the church, which store’s gift cards would you purchase? Save-On-Foods or Safeway
